Mormon Temples
Mormon Temples are the most sacred aspect of the Mormon faith. LDS Temples, or Mormon Temples, stretch across the entire globe and as of 2009 number nearly 140. These temples can be found on all continents (minus Antarctica) and in almost every region of the world. Much of what happens in any of the LDS Church’s Temples is sacred and it is asked that people respect this. One example, the LDS endowment ceremony teaches members of the Mormon Church theological truths pertaining to their journey here in life. Other aspects include the bestowal of symbolic clothing worn by faithful Mormons, often referred to as garments. Though often referred to as “Mormon clothing” or “Mormon underwear” by non-Mormons they simply represent something sacred to Mormons and differ little from symbolic clothing worn by other religions. For example, the vestments of a Catholic priest, the ceremonial clothing of an Orthodox Jew, the hijab of a devout Muslim or the turban of a practicing Sikh. The LDS temple ceremony is only performed inside these structures. Again, there is nothing sensational about it but it does constitute a unique theological aspect of the Mormon Church. Another example, LDS temple weddings, are believed by Mormons to be effective not only until death separates husband and wife but throughout all eternity. In general, LDS Temple ceremonies are considered sacred and faithful members are asked not to divulge what is taught in the temple so as to respect the sanctity of such rites. Those doing otherwise reveal their true selves as they treat with disdain what is most sacred to a growing segment of the world’s population. Only “worthy” members are allowed to enter inside a Mormon Temple, which means that one must be living in accordance to certain commandments and doctrines to be able to enter therein. Though it should be noted that “temple open houses” do allow the public to tour the inside of a Mormon Temple before they are dedicated. Also, there are many beautiful LDS Temple pictures and videos of the interior of Mormon temples available for people to see. Only allowing faithful Mormons to enter into LDS Temples is an effort to maintain the sanctity of the LDS Temple and enforce the fact that it is a privilege to enter a Mormon Temple.

In 1997 there were only 50 Mormon temples in the entire world. Then President at the time, Gordon B. Hinckley, accelerated the pace of building temples significantly.
