Mormon Africa (LDS Church in Black Africa) Video

The history of the Mormon Church in Africa is really very interesting to study.  Despite entering the continent a mere 30 years ago the Mormon Church has and continues to grow quickly in various African nations.  This video that I found does a great job of showing some of the history of the beginnings of the LDS Church in Africa dating back to even before the church was officially recognized and proselytized there.

I thought it would be good to post these in light of the recent events in Nigeria where the Mormon Church closed the Aba Nigeria Temple due to violence and crime in the surrounding area.  I say this because these videos show that there are many faithful and dedicated African Saints and though there may be opposition to the Lord’s work the work will roll forth.  The LDS Church is very strongly established in just a few of the African nations but is quickly setting down roots in many more and the growth continues at a fast pace.

I’ve watched all four parts and took notes but I’ll leave my running commentary out and let you watch them and have your own impressions. Please feel free to leave comments as to what you found most interesting!  (Also, it seems to me that part 4 is not the end of this documentary but I can’t find the rest of the videos posted anywhere. If anyone knows where I can find them please let me know and I will post them on here so that the entire documentary is available in one place.)

It seems that Mormon Africa was made in roughly 1997 or 1998. I guess this from some of the events mentioned and looking up some of the names of the people that appear in the videos. Though it is a little out-dated it is still worth your time to watch as it is a fantastic way to learn a lot about the history of the LDS Church in Africa in just a few minutes.

These are clips from “African Saints: A Prophet’s Journey.” It’s a documentary of Pres. Hinckley’s visit to Africa in 1998. BYU Television occassionaly rebroadcasts the entire ~50-minute video, last was 22 Aug 2009.
