Mormon in India: Sister Julie B. Beck’s Visit To India
Sister Julie B. Beck, general president of the Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also know as the Mormon Church) visited Mormons in Hyderabad, India on June 13 2008. Before visiting Hyderabad she visited Bangalore, in the South of India. She visited India for a Leadership Training Meeting. She came with her husband and President Melvin R. Nichols (Mission President of the India Bangalore Mission). The district presidency was also present for the meeting. She came to the Mormon church building of the Hyderabad II Branch. She also visited other places such as Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia. All church members were invited and there were a lot of members present for the meeting.
Personal Visit to Indian Sister Before Meeting with Mormons in India
Sister Beck met with two sisters in their home before the meeting. As one of the sisters told her about her marital problems and the things that she was struggling with, Sister Beck just did not give her good advice but used the scriptures to strengthen this sister. Sister Beck shared a scripture form Mark 6:48: “And he saw them toiling in rowing, for the wind was contrary unto them, and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea.” She explained that in those times the night was divided in to four watches and even though the Savior saw His disciples struggling with the great winds He did not come to help them in the first hour itself but He came in the last hour. So she said we need to be patient in our trials and wait for the fourth watch. She said in her own life she felt many times that these trials are not going to end and said but the trials did end in the Lord’s due time.
Sister Beck’s Meeting with Mormons in Hyderabad, India
In her talk Sister Beck spoke about importance of families and how husbands and wives can have happy marriages. It’s important that we be willing to sacrifice for each other and also support each other in magnifying callings. She shared her own example that as she is in different nations most of the time and travels extensively but her husband is very patient and supportive. She spoke of creating righteous traditions which will help us to follow the gospel. She also spoke about leadership principles and that we need to work together and pray for our callings.
My Personal Thoughts on Sister Beck’s Visit
I was very impressed the way she presented her talk. It was very simple she did not use any power point presentation or any thing extra, all she used is her own personal example of how she grew and how the Lord helped her. I know that she truly is called of God.
(Editor’s note: This was written by one of Mormon World’s regular contributors, Sangeetha. Sangeetha is a convert to the Mormon Church from India. She shares her stories about being a Mormon in India and her experiences there. I’ve made very few grammatical changes and added headings etc. I’ve attempted to do so while changing her content as little as possible. PRAISE THE LORD.
Dear sister in christ.
I greet you in the most highly and exalted name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He has privileged me to write this letter to you.It is just to share something about my ministry with you for your kind co-operation.
We the group of Pastors, Evangelists and social workers formed this Gospel work on last 8 years and working in rural and urban areas where is no proper Evangelical work and community development activities. In these areas most of the people are uneducated, full of old, traditional beleievers and full of Hinduism.
As the uneducated, they are stubborn to hear the word of God and to be a civilised persons. So we took this as a challenge to work among them, which is very uphill task in their areas. Our aim is to reach every Indian nook and corner and promote the Gospel to every perishing soul. We have no affiliation with any organisation and we have no any kind of support from any where.
Most of our fellow pastors are very poor and really depend on their prayerful believers. They live in huts which are periodically destroyed and natural calamities such as cyclones, floods and fire accidents. If they have a little monthly support they will be able to do the ministry with much enthusiasm.
We have a Christian library which really plays a major role in our Gospel work. And we have a orphanage where we are looking after some parentless children. We are looking forward hopefully for a helping hand to support our ministry. I whole-heartedly invite you to India. Please come once and see our work and encourage us with your blessed ministry. Please share about our ministry with all your co-workers and fellow Christians and reqest them on our behalf to uphold our ministry in their daily prayers.
We are in need of a good quanitity of library material such as tracts, Bibles, books and tapes both audio and video. If God enables you please strech your hand of generosity to support us in the way you can.We sincerely pray for your welfare and prosperity. Please convey our heartily greetings to all who are co-operating with you in your work. I await for your kind and favourable response hopefully and prayerfully.Thanking you.
Sincerely,
In His Saving Grip,
sureshkumar
Wow Julie, did you give them the speech about not putting off having children as you did in the US in 2007? That must have been really applicable in this country that is bursting at the seams with population! And you call this a world wide church!!!
@Anon,
I recognize your freedom to post your opinion but why bother to post something that is purely critical/negative? I don’t see a point in that. Why not just read the article and move on if you don’t like it.

Dear Beloved in Christ,
Greetings to you in the most wonderful name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His richest blessings shall be upon you forever.
I am Pastor V. sureshkumar from Ramachandrapuram , India, writing to you in His precious name. I am residing at Gunter District of Andhra Pradesh State in South India.
Geographically our area is too backward in all aspects. I came from a devotee gospel family. From the very beginning of my early days, I laid my stress on His Services only. By the call of Him, I openly accepted Him as my Savior. At present I exist as the rural Evangelist, at my place. We had one rural Church. Our Church members are very poor, and they can’t offer any contributions for our regular worship. Now I got concentrated on our outreach gospel, which is yielding the best harvest of souls among Hindu people. By our regular prayers, they are getting away to their idol worship, and confessing before God in all of their previous sins. They are accepting our Lord Jesus as their real Savior. They are praising Him regularly. It is one kind of blessing for us. You kindly pray about our present day gospel. I need of your help on our present day gospel. You kindly call on the attention of your people, friends, and intimates among our exact needs.
Further I am running one orphanage for the welfare of 30 orphan children. Once they had struggled a lot at their basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter. But now they are growing on perfect healthy conditions. They are cultivating very good habits under Christian background. I believe they should become as God servants in future. By such a pious target I am train-up them regularly. You kindly bless them on such aspect. Actually I don’t have any fixed or regular support from anywhere. I totally depended upon our local contributions. But nowadays it became very problem for me to attain such local contributions. And it is fact to you that any organization based on Christian faith may can’t achieve of its necessary rants from India. here Christians are in minority. They can’t reach of their targets as per the existed funds from India. Under this background I need of your kind support. You graciously encourage me on my regular services. Basically I want your good fellowship. We shall remember you daily at our regular prayers.
My best wishes to you and to your Church people. I shall await at your prayerful reply. Thanking you in His precious name.
Yours in His Service,
Rev.sureshkumar
